April Fools’ phenom Content Warning draws in more than 204,000 concurrent players-

Content Warning, a co-op horror game in which you and your friends go viral or die trying, made an immediate splash when it launched on Steam on April 1. To an extent, that was unsurprising—it was free for the first 24 hours of release—but I don’t think many people foresaw that it would go quite this big: The Content Warning team said more than 6.2 million people claimed the game on April Fool’s Day, and it racked up a peak concurrent player count of over 204,000.

“It’s been a real treat watching all of your videos and we are so happy that we’ve managed to create something that makes people have fun together,” the developers said in an update posted to Steam.

Content Warning comes off at first glance as something of a gag game, and not just because of its release…

‘Google is a monopolist’ says US judge in ruling on exclusivity deals to get Google Search on all your platforms all the time-

A US judge has ruled that Google violated antitrust laws when it used exclusivity agreements to maintain a monopoly with its search engine.

In the court ruling, District Judge Amit Mehta said: “Google has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act by maintaining its monopoly in two product markets in the United States—general search services and general text advertising—through its exclusive distribution agreements.”

Those “exclusive distribution agreements” are deals such as those Google struck to be selected as the default search engine for various platforms, including through Apple’s Safari browser, Firefox, Android phones, and some US carriers.

“The default is extremely valuable real estate,” Mehta’s ruling states.

One of the plaintiff’s experts, Dr Wh…

Looks like the new Mortal Kombat game is going to be another reboot, called Mortal Kombat 1-

About a week after the mysterious exploding grain of sand in a recent Mortal Kombat anniversary video, NetherRealm Studios has released a more concrete teaser. This new video shows a clock ticking down, past 9, 10, 11… and then skipping over 12 straight to 1.

The message seems pretty clear—following 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11, the new entry won’t be MK12, but rather some kind of reboot or reset. That also lines up a datamined leak that suggests the new game is called Mortal Kombat 1.

Of course, if you played Mortal Kombat 11’s story through to the end, a timeline reboot will make perfect sense to you. Spoilers: that game ended with all of history being erased back to its very beginnings, thanks to the efforts of time-manipulating villain Kronika, and ul…

‘Every stone will not be turned for years’ says Baldur’s Gate 3’s principal narrative designer, on its many hidden outcomes-

While Baldur’s Gate 3 is appreciably big in size—its three acts spanning a lot of square miles —its sheer largeness comes more from the amount of pieces on the board. A tool recently discovered that the thing has around 1,800 characters and over 110,000 lines of text.

So when the game’s principal narrative designer Lawrence Schick tells Inverse in an interview that “every stone will not be turned for years”, I believe him. That’s despite the fact we have a pretty stellar list of hidden dialogues already—every time something new pops up on the internet, I’m just staggered that it just keeps happening.

“So much of the game is a concatenation”—an interconnected web of things—”of unlikely variables. There’s stuff that…

One of Call of Duty’s best-known developers has left Treyarch after nearly 20 years-

David Vonderhaar, one of the most prominent and longest-tenured senior developers on Activision’s long-running Call of Duty series, has announced that after nearly 20 years at Treyarch, he is moving on to other things.

“Today I am sharing that I have left Activision and Treyarch after an incredible 18 years and 8 Call of Duty games,” Vonderhaar wrote in a LinkedIn post. “To my co-workers at Treyarch, I am immensely grateful for the time we invested working to improve our craft, never sitting on successes, and always wondering how to improve what we design and how we produce it.

“Thank you to the Call of Duty community for your passion and enthusiasm. That energy has often fueled our determination as a studio and individuals. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to i…

First Kerbal Space Program 2 patch fixes a mountain of bugs-

In what is perhaps the only situation which you should be excited about the phrase “a mountain of bugs,” Intercept Games has released the first big patch for Kerbal Space Program 2. The situation being, of course, that “a mountain of bugs” is prefaced with “fixed.”

Which they did! A lot of them, in fact. The 0.1.1.0 update contains a tooth-dropping 300 changes ranging from minor to major. The development team thanked the community for all the information, and even credited the community with 42 specific bugfixes that their bug reports directly helped to fix.

Among the most important fixes were a solve to how fuel flows, cutting processing load by a factor of three. Another fixed the RAPIER air-breathing/vacuum engine switching between its modes. There’s also a load of bugs w…

Portrait of King Charles as rizzed-up final boss instantly modded into Dishonored-

Like all Brits I wake up every day and give thanks for our monarchy, before making a cup of tea, nodding at my shrine to Princess Diana, and applying some Duchy-branded resin to the old upper lip. When my day is done the last act is to listen to the shipping forecast, awaiting the glorious moment when “God save the King” lulls me to sleep, perchance to dream of this sceptred isle.

Anyway: last year saw the coronation of the UK’s current monarch, King Charles III (for it is he). One of the many traditions the nation upholds (and frankly one of the less weird ones) is commissioning a top artist to paint the odd picture of them, and on Tuesday May 14 the first official portrait of Charles was unveiled by the king himself.

The painting is by Jonathan Yeo, who’s alongside Charles…
